Heavy snowfall of up to 15 centimeters is disrupting traffic in the northern provinces, with more expected on Thursday, local media have reported.

In Groningen and Drenthe, regional bus services were canceled on Wednesday morning due to the snow, which created extremely slippery road conditions, according to public transport company Qbuzz.

Ook krijgen we enkele meldingen binnen van voertuigen die van de weg zijn geraakt. Ga je op pad? Pas je rijstijl aan de weersomstandigheden aan. pic.twitter.com/X1DarJ90VD

The A7 motorway was particularly badly affected, local broadcaster RTV Noord said.

Train services between Groningen and Assen were also canceled due to the snow and snow ploughs were brought in to clear the runway at Eelde airport.

The KNMI weather bureau had issued a code yellow weather warning for Friesland, Groningen, Drenthe, and the Wadden Islands due to the difficult conditions.

More snow is expected overnight in these provinces, with a second code yellow warning in place from 11 pm on Wednesday until 9 am on Thursday.

The KNMI weather bureau says chilly days and light frosts at night will persist through the weekend and into next week. However, no further snowfall is expected, with sunny weather anticipated toward the end of the month.
