A blaze at a car park in Rijsenhout in Noord-Holland in the early hours of Monday morning which destroyed 40 to 50 cars may have been the result of arson.

The car park is on the A4, just a few kilometres from Schiphol, and is used by holiday makers and other travellers as a cheaper alternative to the airport’s own facilities.

The fire brigade was called out around 3 am to find “cars on fire in multiple places”,  a spokesman said. It took around three hours to douse the flames.

Workers at a company adjacent to the site said security cameras there had captured images of two men carrying petrol tanks and setting fire to the vehicles. They said a business conflict could be at the bottom of the incident.

The car park itself is also equipped with cameras but police are not saying what, if anything, the footage has shown. They are calling on witnesses to report information or hand in any images they may have.
