Eight of the 10 highest paid CEOs at Dutch-registered companies are foreign nationals, an analysis of more than 100 firms by the Volkskrant has revealed.

The annual list is headed for the first time by Booking.com boss Glenn Fogel, who received salary, bonuses and profits from shares totalling €42.3 million in 2023.

The 62-year-old was highly critical of the Dutch government’s investment strategy in an interview with the Telegraaf in June. “Why has the once so business friendly Netherlands changed so much?” he asked.

Second place on the list was taken by Portuguese car magnate Carlos Tavares, who heads Hoofddorp-based Stellantis, which was formed by the merger of Fiat Chrysler and the French PSA group. It owns car makers such as Alfa Romeo, Citroën, Peugeot and Opel.

Tavares earned a total of €36.5 last year, including a €2 million salary. The highest paid executive in salary terms was Lucian Grainge, the British chairman of Universal Music Group, who received €7.5 million as part of a total package worth €27.9 million.

Kurt Sievers, the German head of NXP Semiconductors who has worked at the firm for almost 30 years, is fourth on the list with €19.1 million, followed by the highest paid Dutchman, Richard Blickman.

Blickman, born in Amsterdam, received €19.0 million, including a €650,000 salary, as head of BE Semiconductor, better known as Besi.
