Zandvoort gears up for the Grand Prix, tickets still on sale

The fourth edition of the Zandvoort Grand Prix takes place this weekend, with all eyes pinned on Dutch driver Max Verstappen, and tickets are still available for fans with plenty of cash to spare.

Verstappen is currently in the overall championship lead, and fans are hoping for a fourth consecutive win in Zandvoort as the championship enters the second half. Some 300,000 people are expected to attend the event over the three days of racing.

“We think about this in the same way as Max,” Zandvoort race director Jan Lammers told broadcaster NOS. “If Max loses because he or his team made a mistake then he is ‘pissed off’. But if it’s a good race and the best driver wins, then he is okay with that.”

After a strong start to the season, Red Bull has been without a win over the last four races, and, according to Motorsport Magazine, “there are signs that the reigning world champion’s record-breaking streak of home-field success could be under serious threat”.

The weather may also put a damper on the weekend’s action, with rain forecast on all three days, although most is set to fall on Saturday.

In the meantime, a “business dispute” surrounding third-party ticket sales is ongoing and some people have suggested this could have an impact on the future of the Dutch Grand Prix.

The Telegraaf reported earlier this month that the Formula 1 organisers are in a legal spat with Platinium Group in Monaco, which had 35,000 tickets to sell abroad but has not yet paid the full bill because of poor sales.

The race organisers told the paper they do not expect empty seats, but have declined to say how many seats are unsold.  On Tuesday, tickets were still available for all three days, with the cheapest for Sunday’s main race retailing for €380.

Bosses at Zandvoort circuit have been hopeful the event can become a permanent fixture on the calendar after the current contract runs out in 2025. The race over the 4.3 kilometre circuit, was reinstated in 2021 after a 38-year absence.
