Femke Bol’s sprint finish to give the Netherlands gold in the 4×400 mixed relay competition at the Paris Olympics on Saturday has led to superlative newspaper headlines, and extremely enthusiastic television commentary around the world.

From Brazil to Greece, commentators became more and more excited as Bol moved into third place before overtaking the British and US teams ahead of the finish, just outside the world record time.

The Guardian likened Bol to Usain Bolt, the Jamaican sprinter, saying she is “only a ‘t’ off”, and said her forthcoming race against Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone in the 400 metres hurdles is one of the must see events of the tournament.
