Dutch file sharing service WeTransfer goes Italian

WeTransfer, the Dutch company that makes transferring large volumes of photos and other data possible, is being taken over by Italian tech group Bending Spoons. Financial details were not disclosed.

WeTransfer was founded in the Netherlands by Bas Beerens, Nalden and Damian Bradfield in 2009. It now has some 600,000 paying subscribers and 80 million active users, and booked turnover of €132 million last year.

Bending Spoons said in a statement that as part of the deal it would “affirm its commitment to the creative community” by donating at least $3 million to a foundation that supports emerging artists from under-represented communities over the next two years.

Bending Spoons is also pledging to continue reserving 30% of WeTransfer’s advertising space to give-back campaigns and editorial content.

In 2022, WeTransfer cancelled plans for a stock exchange flotation, saying that high interest rates had made tech firms unpopular.
