No Dutch Olympic medals yet despite enthusiastic royal support

Two “official” days into the Olympics and the Netherlands has yet to make a mark on the medals table following a disappointing weekend.

The biggest disappointment of the weekend was mountain biker Puck Pieterse, who seemed sure of at least the silver medal when a flat tyre put paid to her hopes. She managed to climb back up to fourth place, egged on by cheering Dutch royals.

In the archery competition, the Dutch team could only manage fourth place, and swimmer Arno Kamminga also ended just outside the medals in the 100 metres crawl.

The last time the Dutch team failed to win a medal over the opening weekend was in 1996 during the Atlanta games.

Today’s highlights featuring Dutch hopefuls include Tallon Griekspoor taking on Carlos Alcaraz in the tennis singles second round (7 pm) and the Dutch women’s hockey team and defending champions, against Germany (7.45 pm).
