A 20-year-old man has died after being struck by a speedboat near a marina near Aalsmeer.

The man, from the village of De Lier south of The Hague, was taken to hospital after the collision on Sunday evening, but did not survive his injuries.

The incident happened at around 5pm near the entrance to a marina in Kudelstaart, a village beside the Westeinderplassen lake complex.

The driver of the boat, a 21-year-old man, was arrested and held in custody overnight. Police accident investigators have begun an inquiry.

Police said a large number of people witnessed the collision on the “speedboat run” near the shore. They have been given access to victim support.
