It pays to be cremated in Zeeland and buried in Limburg
The most expensive final resting places in the Netherlands are in the province of Zuid-Holland while cremations will set you back the most in Overijssel, new figures from funeral insurance company Monuta show.
The insurer compared the rates at 1,500 cemeteries and cremation facilities across the country. The average price of a burial now stands at €3,708, up around €200 on last year.
Zuid-Holland tops the list for costly burials, with a price tag of €4,665. Noord-Holland comes next with €4,634. Limburg is the best place for a comparatively cheap burial, with a tally of around €2,403.
Prices include the burial costs and a lease for the next 20 years. Leases are common in the Netherlands where space is at a premium. Leases can be extended but families opt not to, the remains are cleared out and put in a mass grave.
The single most expensive cemetery is Esserveld in Groningen which charges €8,895 including a 30 year lease, 10 times as much for the same package at the Bookholtlaan cemetery in Losser in Twente.
Two thirds of Dutch opt for the much cheaper option of cremation, Monuta found. An average cremation in the Amsterdam region comes to €1,646, almost €100 up from last year. The cheapest option is Zeeland where a cremation costs €1,493. Overijssel, with €1,828, is the most expensive province to be cremated in.
Insurers have also spotted a trend for “no frills” cremations, with mourners swapping the traditional coffee and cake at the reception centre for a drink in a bar.
“It is not just cheaper [than a burial] but people also don’t want to lumber their children with the costs of maintaining the grave,” funeral expert Peter van Schaik told news platform Nu.nl.
