Case against second man in The Voice sex scandal is dropped

Just one of the three men at the centre of a “me too” scandal involving television talent show The Voice of Holland will face legal charges, following the public prosecution department’s decision not to proceed against band leader Jeroen Rietbergen.

The department said on Wednesday that it is dropping the case against Rietbergen because of a lack of evidence, after saying in March last year that it was continuing its investigations. In particular, there is no evidence that Rietbergen used his position to persuade his victim to perform a sexual act, or used physical force, the department said in a statement.

Last year, the department said it would not pursue the case against singer and team leader Marco Borsato because of the lack of evidence.

The third man, rapper and team leader Ali B, will face two charges of rape and one of sexual assault involving three women connected to the show and will appear in court next month.

The investigations were started after a report on YouTube channel Boos, which claimed several dozen women had been harassed and abused by four men behind the scenes.

After the BOOS broadcast, the public prosecution department appealed for victims to come forward and a formal investigation was started.

In the wake of the Boos documentary sponsors cancelled their contracts with the show, another judge, Anouk, quit the line-up and Rietbergen split with his partner, Linda de Mol.

The public prosecutor said it realized that the decision not to press charges would be a disappointment for the woman who made the complaint but said that in the eyes of the law, not all behaviour that could be considered abusive is a crime.
