Two Dutch clubs will play in Champions League in 2025/26 season

Two clubs from the Eredivisie are guaranteed Champions League football in the 2025/26 season after Portuguese club Porto were knocked out on penalties by Arsenal.

Porto’s defeat means Portugal cannot overtake the Netherlands in Uefa’s ranking of countries, which determines how many places are allocated in future competitions.

Next year the top two Dutch clubs – likely to be PSV Eindhoven and Feyenoord – will qualify straight for the lucrative group stage of Europe’s premier club competition, while the third-placed team – currently FC Twente – will be drawn in the third qualifying round.

Two more teams will compete in the Europa League while one place will be available in the third-tier competition, the Conference League. The same allocation will apply in 2025/26.

PSV are still able to earn further points this year towards the Netherlands’ UEFA coefficient, which is the basis of the ranking, but they will have to beat Borussia Dortmund in Germany on Wednesday evening to progress to the quarter-finals.

Ajax are also still alive in the Conference League, where they play Aston Villa in England on Thursday, having drawn 0-0 in the first leg in Amsterdam.
