Police in Amsterdam confirmed they have arrested a man for making death threats against PVV leader Geert Wilders.

The far right politician tweeted about the arrest on Friday, saying the man had said he wanted to kill him. “I would be an easy target without the police,” Wilders said.

Police have not said anything about the man’s identity or motivation. He will appear in court for a remand hearing on Monday.

Wilders has been receiving serious death threats since 2004 because of his outspoken views on Islam. He has 24-hour security and lives in a safe house.

The threats, “sometimes hundreds a day”, not only affect his private life but are also a “threat to the democratic rule of law”,  Wilders has said earlier.

In September last year, a Dutch court sentenced disgraced Pakistani cricketer Khalid Latif to 12 years in absentia for offering a €21,000 reward for the murder of the far-right Dutch political leader in 2018. The Netherlands does not have an extradition treaty with Pakistan.
