The Ajax women’s football team is out of the Champions League after drawing 1-1 away against Chelsea in London.

Ajax lost the first leg of their quarter final tie 0-3, leaving them with a large deficit to make up.

“Ajax bow out with pride and could even have snatched it on the night at the end of their best European run by a long way, having come through an incredibly tough group,” said Uefa reporter Paul Saffer after the game.

The Ajax women’s team are first Dutch club to qualify for the group stage of the European club tournament.

“I think we can be really proud of what we have shown today,” said Ajax captain Sherida Spitse. We are a little disappointed as we are not going to the next round, but in the end we can be really happy with what we have shown, what we have done in this game and the games before.”

The club has pledged to direct more money towards the Ajax women’s team as a bonus for making it this far in the Champions League.
