A better performance on penalties than Fortuna Sittard has put FC Groningen into the semi-finals of the KNVB Cup alongside NEC, SC Cambuur and Feyenoord.

The match ended 0-0 after regular and extra time, but Groningen, playing in front of their home crowd, were able to put one more penalty away than the Eredivisie side.

It is the first time since the 1985/86 season that two first division clubs have made it to the semi-finals of the cup. The draw for the semi-finals takes place on Saturday night, live on television.

Meanwhile, The Netherlands will meet Hungary, Germany and Bosnia Herzegovina in the group stage of this year’s Uefa Nations League competition, which will kick off in September. The final, which will be staged by one of the four nations that qualify, will take place in June 2025.
