The Dutch bought 369,791 new family cars last year, a rise of over 50,000 in 2022, according to figures from motoring organisations Bovag, Rai Vereniging and RDC.
Much of the increase was down to delayed deliveries from 2022.

The most popular new car of the year was the Tesla Model Y, which knocked the Peugeot 208 from its throne with 13,758 sales. Second on the list was the Kia Picanto with 10,530 sales while the 208 racked up 9,007.

The Volvo XC40 was fourth on the list with 8,323 cars and the Kia Niro, third in 2022, in fifth place with 7,412.

Despite no Volkswagen cars making the top 5, the German brand was the most popular overall with almost 35,000 cars and a market share of 9.5%. Kia was second and Toyota third in terms of the most popular brands.

The Tesla Model Y has been available in the Netherlands since September 2022 and costs just under €46,000 for a basic edition. As a fully electric car, it is not currently subject to road tax but that will change in 2025.
