Noah was once again the most popular name for a baby boy in the Netherlands last year, while Julia knocked Emma off the top spot in the list of names for girls.

The figures come from the social insurance bank SVB which pays out child benefits and keeps a record of the top baby name choices. In total, 84,195 boys and 80,074 girls were born in 2023.

Noah was picked by 888 new parents and Julia by 681. Noah has headed the list for the past five years and Julia was also top in 2021.

Name expert Gerrit Bloothooft from Utrecht University told broadcaster NOS the names on the SVB list represent just 7% of the 13,000 different girls and 11,500 boys’ names babies are given every year.

Noah tops the list in most provinces but there was more variety among girls. In Drenthe, for example, Daan and Lotte were the most common names last year and in Flevoland Jan and Hailey.
