Flu and coronavirus in retreat but infections still high

Fewer people are being diagnosed with flu and the number of coronavirus infections also appears to be dropping, according to new figures from public health institute RIVM and the government’s Covid dashboard.

In December, 56 people in 100,000 were visiting their family doctor with symptoms of flu, but that has now fallen to 27, according to the latest figures. And that means there is no ongoing flu epidemic in the Netherlands.

Coronavirus also appears to be in retreat. The volume of coronavirus particles in waste water has fallen 35% since the end of December, indicating fewer people have been infected. Hospital admissions have also gone down from an average of 165 a day to 141.

But despite the drop in the amount of coronavirus in waste water, the figure is still at a record level, the dashboard shows.

The number of children diagnosed with lung infections has also fallen by almost half, although the figure is still high, the RIVM said.
