€30 million lottery prize remains unclaimed after a week

The winner of the €30 million top prize in this year’s New Year Staatsloterij draw has not yet come forward to claim their cash, broadcaster RTL said on Monday.

The missing winner is the hottest topic of conversation in Woensdrecht, where the winning ticket was bought. “Everyone is talking about it,” Niels van Elzakker from the local Primera newsagents said.

Van Elzakker’s store is the biggest in the area and he has offered the lottery company the option of studying surveillance camera footage to try to find the winner. “They know what time the ticket was bought,” he said.

It is not unusual for a prize to remain unclaimed for a time, but this is the longest the big ticket has remained a mystery, RTL said.

Staatsloterij spokesman Thomas van Vessem said it could also be that the winner wants to wait a while until things are calmer before putting in a claim.

Prizes that are not picked up are given to good causes.
