Swimmer drowns in lake, water still too cold, officials warn

A 21-year-old man from Amsterdam who was hauled out of a lake on Monday after getting into trouble trying to save to save a French tourist from drowning has died in hospital.

The emergency services received a report on Monday night about two swimmers in the Vinkeveense Plassen who were seen to be struggling, local broadcaster RTV Utrecht reported.

It is thought the 21-year-old had come to the aid of the Frenchman, who remains in hospital.

With temperatures still high, many people are looking to cool off in lakes and streams but, officials warn, the water is still very cold. In addition, cold currents are also a danger to swimmers.
