Risk of a terror attack in NL increases, threat level unchanged
The likelihood of a terrorist attack in the Netherlands has increased over the past few months but the threat level remains at 3 on a scale of 1 to 5, the Dutch counter terrorism unit NCTV said on Tuesday.
In particular, Islamic terror groups have again set their sights on the Netherlands since anti-Islam activist Edwin Wagensveld tore up a Koran in public, the agency said.
The NCTV, which publishes an update three times a year, said there are more signs that Europe will be targeted and that the Netherlands is specifically in the picture.
“Several pro-ISIS channels have called via social media for retaliatory attacks against Western countries, explicitly including Sweden and, to a lesser extent, the Netherlands,” the service said.
In particular, Dutch interests abroad run the risk of being targeted, the NCTV said.
Last week, the domestic security service AIVD warned that the growing number of conspiracy theorists in the Netherlands could have impact on the rule of law in the Netherlands in the long term.
The NCTV has also warned about the rise in far-right extremism.
The NCTV threat level has been at 3 since December 2019.
