Dutch number one tennis player Botic van de Zandschulp saw the chance of a first tour title slip from his grasp as he lost in Munich to Danish teenager Holger Rune.

Rune, the world number seven, won the first set 6-4 but suffered a collapse in form in the second, losing 6-1 and complaining loudly about being let down by his equipment.

Van de Zandschulp kept up the pressure and built a 5-2 lead in the deciding set, while his 19-year-old opponent called a medical time-out to be treated for a sore shoulder.

But the Dutchman, ranked 29th in the world, squandered two match points in the eighth game and despite breaking his opponent again in the 11th game, passed up another two opportunities to serve for the match at 6-5.

Rune completed a remarkable comeback by winning the decisive tie-break 7-3.

‘This defeat is more painful than our previous final,’ Van de Zandschulp said afterwards. Last year the 27-year-old also faced Rune in the BMW Open final in Munich, but had to quit while leading in the first set because of breathing problems.
