AZ qualified for the semi-finals of the Conference League competition on Thursday night but there was heartbreak for Feyenoord who lost to AS Roma in extra time.

AZ beat Anderlecht of Belgium 2-0 in their tie, eliminating their 2-0 defeat away last week. The Alkmaar side went on to win the game after extra time with penalties by Jordy Clasie, Yukinari Sugawara, Tijjani Reijnders and Mexx Meerdink.

They will now take on English side West Ham in their bid to reach the finals of the third tier European competition. The Alkmaar side have not progressed so far in Europe for 18 years.

Feynoord, who took a 1-0 goal advantage to AS Roma, found victory snatched from them in the dying moments of regular time when Roma made it 2-1. The Roman side scored twice more in extra time, to beat the Dutch side 4-2 on aggregate.

‘”I respect my team for playing with courage in this atmosphere,’ Feyenoord coach Arno Slot told the Uefa website after the game. ‘In the end, it wasn’t enough because Dybala scored a fantastic goal. Dybala and Abraham were too much for us.’
