Ajax wishes AFC Richmond good luck in Ted Lasso tie

Ajax have ‘hung’ a banner outside in the pub in popular TV series Ted Lasso wishing fictional club AFC Richmond good luck in their friendly against the Amsterdammers.

Ted Lasso is an American comedy drama about a Premier League football club managed by the inexperienced Lasso, who often spends time with locals in the Crown and Anchor pub. The show is said to be the most popular programme on American television at the moment and won a record eight Grammys last season.

With Ajax set to meet AFC Richmond in the show, the Amsterdammers have doctored a photo of the famous pub with their own text poking fun at the similarities between the two sides and wishing them good luck.

‘We know what y’all Richmond folk must be thinking: Ajax? They think they invented football with their academy and their silverware. Fair point. But did you know our clubs are actually pretty dang similar?,’ the photo-shopped poster reads.

‘We both use AFC in our names (which is pretty cool if you ask us, it’s like we’re part of a secret club or something). Then there’s the fact that we both use ‘020’ as our dialing codes… Callincidence? Don’t think so!’

Ajax has been investing heavily in getting its name known in the US and has an office in New York. The episode can be seen in the Netherlands from Wednesday on Apple TV.
