A train driver has been killed after being hit by a train on the tracks between Driebergen and Maarn, Dutch railway company NS has confirmed.

The incident happened shortly before 8pm on Sunday evening. As yet the NS has not said why the driver was on the tracks but have stressed it was an accident.

Train traffic was halted for several hours.  Passengers had to walk from the railway to the A12 where they were picked up in buses so they could continue their journeys.
