Two men have been taken to hospital after being trapped when a crane collapsed on a building site in Utrecht.

The crane was lifting a concrete slab over the top of a building on Maliebaan when the arm snapped and dropped the slab, which trapped a worker on the ground who was waiting to place it behind the building.

The other worker was standing on scaffolding beneath the crane which collapsed when the arm fell through it. Both men were freed by a specialist fire service crew and are said to be doing well.

Several children were evacuated from a neighbouring daycare facility as a precaution.

Workplace safety inspectors and the construction and housing sector watchdog will investigate the cause of the accident and the storage conditions for the crane.
