The freezing conditions are set to continue for several days and the KNMI weather bureau issued a code yellow weather warning on Thursday, because of slippery roads and black ice.

Thursday, Friday and Saturday will be dry with cloud and sunny spells, although there could be the odd wintry shower on the coast, the KNMI said on Thursday.

That means the risk of slippery roads and black ice will continue over the weekend, particularly at night and in the early morning.

However, skaters will need to make the most of the chilly temperatures now because next week will be warmer and wet, with rain every day and only a slight chance of frost at night.

By Monday the temperature during the day could rise to as much as 12 Celsius, the KNMI said.
