Speed skater Irene Schouten and Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen were named sportswoman and man of the year at the annual gala event in Amsterdam on Wednesday night.

Schouten picked up three gold and one bronze medal at the Beijing Winter Olympics, setting new Olympic records in the 3,000 and 5,000 metres. She also holds the World allround title.

Verstappen was named sportsman of the year for the third time. This year he retained the Formula One title, winning a record 15 races. His sister Victoria accepted the prize on his behalf.

The team of the year award went to the women’s 4×400 relay team who won silver at the world indoor championships in March and took the European title in August in Munich.
