HIV prevention pill is working, as new infections drop last year
The HIV prevention pill Prep has reduced the number of new infections in the Netherlands, the HIV Monitoring foundation concludes in a new report.
The number of new cases of HIV in the Netherlands has fallen steadily since 2008, dropping to 660 in 2019 and last year to 427, the foundation said.
At the same time, the proportion of men who who have sex with men being diagnosed with recent infections has gone down from 37% to 27%. By recent infections, the foundation means people who tested negative for HIV in the year before their diagnosis.
Prep has been available in the Netherlands for men who have sex with men and are at risk of HIV since mid 2019.
In 2021, 427 people were diagnosed with HIV, of whom 250 were men who have sex with men, 121 were men and women who acquired their HIV through heterosexual contact, and the rest had an unknown modes of transmission.
