Real Dutch coronavirus death toll nears 45,000: CBS
In total, 1420 people died from coronavirus in the second quarter this year, taking the death toll in the Netherlands to 44,760 by the end of June, national statistics agency CBS said on Friday.
Two thirds of them were over the age of 80 and many lived in residential care, the CBS said. Just 6% of those dying of coronavirus between April and the end of June were under the age of 65.
The new CBS estimate is double the official figure in the government’s coronavirus dashboard which stands at 22,748 up to mid October.
The figures are based on doctors’ death certificates and not everyone counted as a Covid death had been tested for the disease.
The dashboard figure only includes people who have been tested for coronavirus and whose death was reported by their local health board to the public health institute RIVM. Reporting coronavirus deaths is not compulsory.
