Soldier shot in chest in Iraq ‘was hit by colleague’

A soldier who was seriously injured while serving in Iraq was shot in the chest by a colleague, Dutch military police have said.

Inquiries are continuing into the incident, which happened on the Erbil military airbase in northern Iraq on Sunday. A military team police is expected to travel from the Netherlands to conduct a full investigation.

Both men are serving with the 11th Air Assault Brigade, who are part of the Dutch unit guarding the base.

The wounded soldier is being treated in a military hospital in Baghdad.
