With 85% of the votes counted, the Labour party (PvdA), led by Marjolein Moorman, is set to be the biggest party in Amsterdam, upping their share of the vote by over six percentage points to 17%.

GroenLinks and D66, who were said to be in a  neck and neck race, both lost support. GroenLinks shed 5.6% and is now on 14.8%, D66 is down 2.3% at just under 14%.

Nevertheless, the results mean the three parties could comfortably form a new coalition without the SP, whose vote crumbled to 4.3%.

The VVD lost marginally to take 10.5%. Minority rights group Bij1 and the pro-animal PvdD both added votes, finishing at just under 7%. Denk, newcomer Volt, right-wing JA21 and the SP are all likely to win two seats in the 45-seat council.

The CDA, which is never a good performer in the capital, and far right Forum voor Democratie, may both scrape one. Forum won three seats in Amsterdam in 2018.

Turnout in the capital was just 46%, compared with 52% at the last local elections four years ago.
