Suzanne Schulting has successfully defended her short track 1,000 metres title at the Beijing Olympics, winning the race ahead of South Korea’s Minjeong Choi and Hanne Desmet of Belgium.

Schulting was hot favourite for the event and earlier took the silver medal in the 500 metres.

The 24-year-old, who fell during the mixed relay, putting an end to the Dutch medal hopes, will take part later in the games in the 1,500 metres and the women’s relay final.

The men’s short track team had a day of disasters on Friday, with none of them qualifying for the 500 metres semi-finals and the relay team also missing out on a final place.

Earlier in the day, Patrick Roest took the silver medal in the men’s 10,000 metres distance event, with Sweden’s Nils van der Poel again picking up the gold.
