Irene Schouten is ice distance queen with second gold medal
Irene Schouten has taken her second gold medal of the Winter Olympics in Beijing, winning the 5,000 metres in a time of 6:43.51.
Canada’s Isabelle Weidemann took the silver and Martina Sáblíková, the two-times Olympic champion at the distance, won bronze.
Schouten, the favourite for the race, also took gold in the 3,000 metres on Saturday.
The 29-year-old becomes only the third Dutch woman to win gold at this distance, following on from Yvonne van Gennip, who also took the double in 1988, and Esmee Visser in 2018. Visser did not qualify for the Olympics this year.
Schouten will be in action again with Ireen Wüst and Antoinette de Jong in the team pursuit on Tuesday and will also take part in the mass start on Saturday.
The Dutch long and short track skaters are back in action on Friday, when Jorrit Bergsma and Patrick Roest kick of the action in the 10,000 metres.
The Netherlands is currently fifth in the medals table, with four gold, three silver and one bronze.
