The number of coronavirus patients in hospital is still falling by around 12% a week despite the surge in positive tests, latest figures show.

A total of 1,435 people are currently being treated, including 378 in intensive care, compared to 1,497 on Monday and 1,644 a week ago. Three Dutch patients are being treated in German ICU departments.

Another 32,149 cases were recorded in the last 24 hours, bringing the seven-day average figure close to 30,000. The infection rate is 71% higher than a week ago. More than 34% of all tests taken gave a positive result.

The RIVM also recorded an average of 12 deaths a day in the last week, compared to 25 a week ago.
