Coronavirus cases rising fast, patient numbers still declining
More than 27,000 people tested positive for coronavirus in the past 24 hours for the fourth day in a row, according to latest figures from the public health agency RIVM.
The average number of daily cases over seven days has gone up by almost 84% in the last week to 27,244, while 34% of all tests taken are positive. On Monday morning 27,993 positive tests were reported, the third highest figure ever.
The number of patients in hospital increased by 56 from Sunday to 1,535, but has gone down by 12% in the last week.
There are currently 405 coronavirus patients in intensive care, 17% fewer than a week ago, including nine being treated in Germany.
The average death rate has halved in the last week from 35 per day to 17, including eight on Monday. Fewer deaths tend to be recorded over the weekend for administrative reasons.
