More than 1,500 people are being treated in Dutch hospitals for coronavirus for the first time since May 27.

Latest figures from the public health agency RIVM showed that the number of patients in hospital has gone up by 83 since Sunday, with 1,573 Covid-19 patients altogether including 326 in intensive care.

Another 11,848 positive tests were reported on Monday morning, while the seven-day average figure was higher than 10,000 for only the third time this year.

Confirmed cases have risen by 40.5% in the last seven days, while the number of patients in hospital is 29.8% higher. More than one in six coronavirus tests taken currently (17.2%) reveals an infection.

The RIVM also confirmed 22 deaths from Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, in line with the average of 23 over the last 7 days. A week ago the average figure was 15 deaths a day.
