Six weeks after the fall of Kabul, seven in 10 Dutch people say that the Netherlands should accept refugees from Afghanistan in principle, but 17% are completely opposed, according to an Ipsos survey for current affairs show Nieuwsuur.

However, 30% of the people polled only want to admit Afghan nationals and their families who can be proved to have helped the Dutch, while a further 28% are also happy to bring in Afghans who worked for human rights or were politically active. Just 13% back allowing all Afghan refugees to come to the Netherlands.

The Netherlands brought 1897 people out of Kabul during the evacuation which followed the withdrawal of peacekeeping forces. Of them just over 1,000 are now going through the asylum process.

Many of them are being put up in temporary accommodation because the current reception centres are full, and there have been protests at some locations, including at the Harskamp army base near Ede.
