Netherlands men’s team captain Virgil van Dijk will rejoin the squad after an absence of nearly a year for next month’s World Cup qualifiers.

The Liverpool defender had to miss Euro 2020 after he had to undergo knee surgery for a cruciate ligament injury suffered in a match against Everton last October.

Manager Louis van Gaal has also recalled Tottenham striker Steven Bergwijn and defender Denzel Dumfries, who moved from PSV Eindhoven to Inter Milan after he was one of the few Dutch players to impress during the summer tournament.

Feyenoord midfielder Guus Til has been named three years after winning his only cap so far for Oranje, while PSV goalkeeper Joël Drommel comes in after Ajax’s Maarten Stekelenburg retired from international football.

There are also potential debuts for Ajax’s 18-year-old right-back Devyne Rensch and Feyenoord defender Tyrell Malacia.

Oranje travel to Norway next Wednesday night before playing home matches against Montenegro on September 4 and Turkey on September 7. The national side are second in Group G after three games, a point behind Turkey and level with Montenegro and Norway.
