A 35-year-old Polish national who lives in Maurik in Gelderland, and a 21-year-old man from Rotterdam will appear in court on Friday in connection with the shooting of crime journalist Peter R de Vries on Tuesday night.

The two suspects were arrested in a car on the A4 motorway at the Leidschendam turn-off on Tuesday evening not long after the shooting close to the busy Leidseplein in Amsterdam.

The arrests were followed by searches at homes in Tiel, Maurik and Rotterdam, where IT equipment and ammunition were seized, police said.

A third man who was also arrested, an 18-year-old Amsterdammer, has been released from custody and is not considered a suspect, police said in a statement.
