A further 11,363 new coronavirus cases were reported to public health institute RIVM by 10am on Friday, up 330 on Thursday.

However, the increase in the number of cases appears to be slowing, with the seven day average now up 213% on the previous week, compared with over 500% on July 14.

Nevertheless, the number of hospital admissions is also rising. There are now 265 people being treated in hospital, of whom 75 are in an intensive care ward. The total number of hospital patients has risen by 35 overnight.

On Thursday, the Netherlands was upgraded to a red zone on the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control’s official map because of the surge in cases.
