Some 84% of the people who tested positive for coronavirus in the past week had not been vaccinated and 10% had had a single dose, according to figures collected by the public health institute RIVM.

Just 6%, or 2,562 of the 42,000 people whose vaccination status is known, said they were fully vaccinated at the time of their test.

However, the status of around one third of those who were tested in the past seven days is unknown. Nor do officials know when people who had been vaccinated were given their second dose. The government currently assumes that maximum protection is reached after two weeks.

‘Some 18 million vaccinations have now been given but many people have still not been vaccinated or not completely,’ the RIVM said.

‘A coronavirus vaccination protects most people against becoming seriously ill and ensures that it is not spread so quickly. But even if you have been vaccinated, there is still a chance you become infected and can therefore infect others.’
