Transport ministry officials have successfully started moving a 200 metre long temporary bridge on pontoons through the centre of Rotterdam to its new location at the Maasvlakte industrial area.

The bridge, which is 40 metres high and 20 metres wide, is being moved by tugs to its new location next to the existing Suurhoff bridge, which is being renovated. The Suurhoff bridge is a important link between the city and the port area.

The transport will resume on Monday night and the temporary bridge will be anchored at its new location on the night of May 14. ‘The planning of both moving the bridge and fixing its location is dependent on the weather and the tides, so could change at short notice,’ the transport and waterways department said.

The process of moving the bridge can be followed via live stream.

The bridge is one of 13 in the province of Zuid-Holland which are undergoing major renovations or which is being replaced.
