Coronavirus cases may be leveling off, 2.6 million have been vaccinated
A further 7,296 positive coronavirus tests were registered with public health institute RIVM in the 24 hours to Friday morning.
The figure is 562 down on Thursday’s total and below the average for the past week, indicating that the growth in new cases may be leveling off.
However, hospital admissions are increasing and 705 people are currently being treated in intensive care – the highest level since January 9, according to figures from the patient monitoring centre LCPS.
The health ministry estimates that 2.6 million doses of vaccine have now been administered since the campaign started in January, which is behind schedule due to the AstraZeneca delivery problems.
However, on Thursday, 86,000 people received a vaccination, a new daily record, the ministry figures show. Some 13.3 million people in the Netherlands are eligible to be vaccinated.
Health minister Hugo de Jonge has said every adult in the country who wants to be vaccinated will have had at least one dose by the beginning of July.
