Ajax are to allow 7,500 fans into the Amsterdam ArenA for the potential championship decider against AZ Alkmaar on April 25 after the match was included in the government’s trial of ‘corona safe’ events.

The club has also moved the kick-off time from 8pm to 2.30pm to avoid a clash with the 10pm curfew, which will stay in force at least until April 28.

The tickets will be offered free of charge to season ticket holders, including those who asked for a refund for the current season, which has been played almost entirely in empty stadiums.

Ajax can clinch their 35 Dutch league title if they win their game in hand against Utrecht next Thursday and beat AZ three days later.

Fans will have to produce a recent negative coronavirus test before being allowed into the stadium, wear masks and keep 1.5 metres apart. They will also have to follow the KNVB’s matchday protocol, which bans standing up and singing during the game.

The Outbreak Management Team advising the cabinet on its pandemic response has raised concerns the FieldLab ‘test for entry’ events because of the numbers attending and the reliability of the fast-response tests being used. They also criticised the decision to allow children under 13 into the events without a test.
