Twitter has for the first time branded a tweet by a Dutch politician as ‘misleading’, singling out a comment by far right MP Thierry Baudet about coronavirus.

Baudet wrote earlier this month that he would ‘absolutely not’ be vaccinated. ‘The virus poses a negligible risk for me,’ he said. ‘The side effects are serious and the long-term impact on the immune system is unknown.’

In its rebuttal, Twitter says the tweet is misleading and invites readers to click on a message for more information about why health officials consider the vaccines to the be safe.

Baudet’s party Forum voor Democratie described the intervention on its Twitter account as ‘foreign interference’ in Dutch democracy and said ‘American big tech’ was ‘censoring a Dutch party leader a week before the election’.

Twitter’s move means the tweet can no longer be shared or commented on.
