A 7-0 away win in Gibraltar helped restore Oranje’s World Cup hopes on Tuesday night as Group G leaders Turkey unexpectedly dropped points against Latvia.

The Dutch had a difficult first half with many missed chances, but four goals within 10 minutes in the second sealed the match. Meanwhile in Istanbul, Turkey conceded a late equaliser to draw 3-3 with Latvia, while Norway won 1-0 in Montenegro.

Daley Blind was taken off in the 53rd minute with what appeared to be a serious injury, but coach Frank de Boer confirmed later it was his ankle, not knee as feared.

De Boer described the match against Gibraltar, ranked 190th in the world, as ‘almost anti-football’. ‘I am glad this game is over,’ he said.

Turkey lead the group with seven points after three games, while the Netherlands, Norway and Montenegro all have six.

The World Cup qualifiers resume in September, when the Dutch travel to Norway before taking on Montenegro and Turkey at home.
