Dutch police have picked up a further 24 people for taking part in or inciting riots over the past few days, but Thursday night passed off peacefully nationwide, officials say.

In total, 72 people have now been arrested in connection with the Eindhoven riots on Sunday, and more arrests are likely, police said on Friday. The Oost-Brabant police force has sequestered cars, money, bank accounts and even salaries from some of the people arrested in connection with the disturbances.

Police say they want to ensure that eventual claims for damages can be paid by the perpetrators themselves. The property remains in public prosecution department hands and will only be returned if the suspects are eventually found not guilty.

Four people have so far been sentenced to jail terms in super fast trials for their roles in the disturbances.

In one case, a 20-year-old man from Amersfoort was jailed for two months for throwing a stone at a police car. In a second, a 32-year-old man from Den Dolder was jailed for three months for inciting people to riot in Utrecht. He had previous convictions, hence the severity of the sentence, the public prosecution department said.

Two more cases, involving men involved in the Rotterdam riots, are being heard on Friday.
