Extra scrutiny for parliamentary security in The Hague post Capitol storming
Security at the Dutch parliament complex is being put under the spotlight in the wake of the storming of the US Capitol by pro-Trump supporters earlier this week, broadcaster NOS has reported.
Parliamentary chairwoman Khadija Arib says she wants to know if there are vulnerabilities in the Dutch security system and to make sure that everything is working properly.
Events in the US ‘make you think’, Arib said. ‘That is why we are going to look at all the procedures to look for vulnerabilities.’
Arib is known to be concerned at the way demonstrators outside the lower house of parliament have been badgering and shouting at MPs in recent weeks. However, events in the US are in a different league, she said.
‘It is not that it could happen here,’ she said. ‘People could not just storm the Binnenhof and take over the building.’
