The number of newly notified positive coronavirus cases in the Netherlands rose by 288 in the 24 hours to Friday 10am, taking the total to 7,272, the first rise in positive cases in a week. Last weekend, the total dipped under 10,000 after weeks of steady increases.

A further 180 people were admitted to hospital, down 81 on Thursday, and the number of people being treated in hospitals nationwide fell by 67 to 2,445. Of them, 603 are being cared for in intensive care units, a drop of four on yesterday’s total.

The death rate, however, continues to rise, and 118 new death reports were filed in the 24 hours to Friday morning.  However, death registrations can be delayed for days or even weeks before they are included in the official figures.

Most new cases were again in Rotterdam, where 533 people tested positive for the virus. In Amsterdam, there were 308 positive tests while The Hague reported 218.
