Frank de Boer’s debut as national football coach resulted in a 1-0 loss loss to Mexico, with Raul Jimenez scoring from a penalty an hour into the friendly.

Dutch media described Oranje’s performance as ‘dull’ and ‘average’, but pointed out De Boer had not used his strongest team, leaving some key players such as Frenkie de Jong and Quincy Promes on the bench to make sure they are fit to play Bosnia and Italy in the Nations League.

Captain Virgil van Dijk said after the game that the team realised it would be a tricky evening. ‘Mexico has a team full of quality, intensity, passion and hard work,’ he said. ‘We somewhat expected this.’
